To enable Thumbnails View, select "View | Thumbnails View". The FTP commands and server responses appear in FTP Voyager's log pane when connected to an FTP site. Have you ever wondered what these commands and responses mean?

To find out just double click on a command or server response. Your web browser will appear giving you information about the command or response.

FTP Voyager's log pane, by default, is the lower left pane. Drag and Drop is the easiest way to transfer files with FTP Voyager. To upload a file to a server, select the local file in the local pane (or Windows Explorer), drag and drop it on to the desired destination folder on the FTP server. FTP Voyager will upload the selected file(s).

To download a file from a server, select the remote file in the remote pane, drag and drop it to the desired destination folder in FTP Voyager's local panes, on your desktop, or in Windows Explorer. Sequentially transferring smaller files can sometimes be slow. If you need to transfer many smaller files, try using one of the Power Transfer options instead of regular upload or download. Power Upload and Power Download are both available under the "File" menu or, by default, on the remote and local toolbars. When using one of the Power Transfer options, all files are placed into a queue and transferred simultaneously.

To set the number of threads for Power Transfers, open the "View | Options | File Transfer" dialog. FTP Voyager can launch when an FTP URL (ftp://) is clicked in a web page.

To enable Browser Integration, open "View | Options | Browser Integration", then enable the option. Description Files are files automatically read by FTP Voyager to add descriptions to files and folders. If a description exists for a file, the description is shown in the remote list under the Description column. Normally, descriptions files are named 00index.txt or index.txt. To modify these options, visit "View | Options | Description Files".

For more information, select "Help" inside the Description Files Options dialog. Remote Editing allows you to modify a file without having to manually download then upload the file again. Each of the three toolbars may be configured individually. When opening files, FTP Voyager opens the program associated with that file in Windows. Alternate Editors allows you to enter file extensions and program paths to be used instead of the program defined by Windows. One example is for .html files. Opening an html file in Windows normally starts a web browser. If you want FTP Voyager to open an HTML editor instead, enter the path to the editor here.

Visit "View | Options | Alternate Editors" to change your settings. FTP Voyager Secure can transfer files as securely as your web browser. The secure options, for a site profile, can be found under "Advanced | Security" for any site profile. Select the method of encryption to ensure secure, encrypted, file transfers. The XCRC command is used automatically by FTP Voyager to ensure the actual data uploaded or downloaded matches the source file. The XCRC option can be disabled or enabled under "Advanced | File Transfer" for a site, or under "View | Options | File Transfer" for all sites. Copying or moving site profiles is easy when using Drag and Drop within the Site Profile Manager. Using either right or left mouse button drag and drop, FTP Voyager's Site Profile Manager allows you to make copies of site profiles, or to move a site profile to another folder. When the right mouse button is used, the FTP Voyager Site Profile Manager displays a menu when the item is dropped. Select the desired option to move, copy, or cancel the operation. FTP Voyager's Filters allow you to include or exclude files and directories from the local and remote panes. Filters are defined on a site-by-site basis by using "Tools | Filters" or selecting the "Filters" button in the Site Profile Manager. One use is when maintaining web sites. Often times HTML editors leave "internal" files around that are not needed on your web server. When this is the case, use FTP Voyager filters by adding to the "Exclude" list. Folder Short Cuts are available on a site-by-site basis. They allow you to create a virtual folder on the remote server, that allows you to navigate very quickly to a folder. Folder Short Cuts are extremely useful to give one click access to a folder layered very deep into the remote tree. Another use is for folders that are "hidden" on the server. If you need to send a connected FTP server a special command manually, simply right click in the log pane or the remote list pane, then select "Send FTP Command", or press Ctrl+E. Custom Commands can be created and executed manually under "Tools | Custom Commands" or by right mouse clicking in the remote list. Custom Commands can also be executed after login to a server for a particular site profile. This is especially useful when the server requires certain extra commands to go into a certain mode.

Custom Commands can be defined for a site profile under "Advanced | Custom Commands" in the Site Profile Manager. Do you need to stop an FTP connection? Do you need to stop Thumbnail Loading? Try pressing the Stop button on the toolbar, select "Tools | Stop", or press F9. FTP Voyager will stop the current transaction. LIST Parameters can be defined for a site profile to help get directory listings with the information you need. The LIST parameters are sent with the LIST command. Some common UNIX parameters are -alT, -a, and -T.

This feature can be found under "Advanced | Connection" for a site profile. Manual Download, found under "Tools | Manual Get", is useful to download files that are not visible in a directory listing. For security reasons, some system administrators will disable directory listing support, but will allow a file to be downloaded if you know the path. Use this feature when a source file is hidden, but you know it exists. Some FTP servers do not have file systems that are like Windows. For example, UNIX file names are letter case sensitive. Use the Name Conversion options, under "Advanced | Name Conversion", to convert file names as needed. File names can be converted to all upper case, all lower case, upper case to lower case, and first character to upper case.

For more information about these options, select "Help" in the Name Conversion dialog. FTP Voyager can automatically rename files ending with certain extensions. Select "View | Options | Auto Rename" to change these values. Both upload renaming and download renaming can be configured.

NOTE: Automatic Rename (for either upload or download) must also be enabled for a Site Profile, which is found under "Advanced | File". Server-to-Server Transfers are possible by opening two copies of FTP Voyager and connecting to the two servers. After both servers are connected, drag and drop from the source FTP Voyager to the destination FTP Voyager.

File transfers will occur at the connection speed of the two server since the files are transferred directly between the two servers and not downloaded then uploaded. When using FTP Voyager and a Serv-U server, FTP Voyager automatically maintains file dates and times when uploading files. The FTP protocol, as defined by RFC 959, does not support maintaining uploaded file dates and times. However many servers, including Serv-U, are capable of doing this. FTP Voyager will automatically detect those servers that support this feature.

To disable this feature, visit "Advanced | File" for a site profile and disable "Keep local file time on uploaded files". When FTP Voyager starts, it normally brings up the Site Profile Manger. To change what is brought up when FTP Voyager starts, visit "View | Options | User Interface" and change the "When Starting FTP Voyager" option. When FTP Voyager uploads, downloads, or gets a directory listing, either a PORT or PASV command is issued to instruct the server how the data transfer connection is to occur. If LIST, RETR, or STOR appear to "lock up" or stall, try using the other connection method (PASV or PORT). This option can be configured under "View | Options | Connection". These commands may fail due to firewalls, proxy servers, or security options. Using PASV or PORT mode normally solves any transfer problem. File Permissions can be changed by selecting remote files, right mouse clicking, and selecting "Properties". If connected to a UNIX style server, FTP Voyager will show the permission settings and allow you to make changes to them. If you need assistance, feel free to contact our technical support staff.
